Ariel International Fund on Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc.
Thesis
Ariel purchased Sumitomo Mitsui because the market appears to be valuing it as though Japan remains in the zero-interest-rate era. Rising Bank of Japan rates improve the economics of its large base of low-cost deposits as assets reprice faster than liabilities. The Olive digital platform and Jefferies partnership can expand higher-return payments, advisory and wealth businesses. Unwinding legacy cross-shareholdings and redeploying capital into growth and buybacks should further lift returns on equity.
“lift profitability and return on equity well beyond what the market’s zero-rate assumptions imply.”
Key risks
- Japanese interest-rate normalization may be slower than expected
- Deposits may reprice faster and erode the anticipated margin benefit
- Execution risk in digital banking, advisory growth and capital redeployment
