Asia Frontier Capital Ltd. on Agriculture Bank Insurance JSC
Thesis
Agriculture Bank Insurance is positioned to benefit from the same higher interest-rate environment that is pressuring much of the Vietnamese equity market. As an insurer, the company holds substantial assets in bank deposits and other interest-bearing instruments, allowing higher rates to translate into increased investment income. AFC notes that ABI trades at approximately six times earnings and one times book value while holding around VND 3,860 billion in cash and bank deposits compared with a market capitalization of roughly VND 1,895 billion. Although these financial assets support insurance liabilities and regulatory capital rather than representing entirely surplus cash, the fund considers the valuation striking. As the deposit portfolio is reinvested at higher yields, the macroeconomic headwind facing the wider market could become an earnings tailwind for ABI.
“Higher interest rates can therefore translate directly into higher investment income.”
Key risks
- Its large cash and deposit balance is not surplus cash because it supports insurance liabilities and regulatory capital requirements.
- The earnings benefit depends on the deposit portfolio being reinvested at higher yields.
