Baron Fifth Avenue Growth Fund on Coupang, Inc.

Thesis

The Fund believes Coupang remains a competitively advantaged e-commerce platform despite temporary margin pressure and lingering effects from its 2025 data breach. Capacity and supply-chain investments weighed on near-term margins, while a large privacy fine and weak sentiment pressured the stock. The Fund believes these issues are temporary because paid membership has substantially recovered and returning members have resumed previous spending levels. Coupang continues to gain share in Korea while also scaling its Taiwan operations.

Despite these headwinds, our conviction remains intact.

Key risks

  • Capacity and supply-chain investments could continue to pressure margins.
  • The consequences of the 2025 data breach could affect customers, regulatory costs, or market share.
  • Execution risk remains as Coupang scales its Taiwan operations.
