Bonsai Partners Fund, LP on Wise
Thesis
Wise is one of the fund's largest positions and is viewed as a company with a hidden moat created by a stack of interlocking capabilities rather than one dominant competitive advantage. Its vertically integrated infrastructure connects directly to local payment systems and, where possible, central banks, reducing middleman costs while improving speed and reliability. Wise also operates a cost-plus pricing model that passes scale efficiencies back to customers, creating a cycle in which lower prices attract greater volume and greater volume improves unit economics. Proprietary automation across its back-office processes further lowers its structural cost-to-serve. Bonsai believes this combination is exceptionally difficult to replicate and gives Wise structural cost leadership as the largest non-bank cross-border payments provider.
“Wise is one of our largest positions and a classic example of a hidden moat.”
Key risks
- Stablecoins could commoditize the treasury component of cross-border payments and narrow part of Wise's existing competitive advantage.
