FP Foresight Global Real Infrastructure Fund on Transurban Group

Thesis

The fund views Transurban’s agreement to purchase additional stakes in Sydney toll roads positively. It is increasing ownership of familiar, established roads with long concessions rather than entering unknown assets. Sydney’s population growth and new transport links should support traffic volumes, while a greater share of toll-road earnings can compound cash flow over time. The A$4.5 billion deal is expected to be debt-funded without issuing equity and to complete in 2027, subject to approval.

“We view this positively, as owning a larger share of these roads provides an additional source of cash-flow growth over time.”

Key risks

  • The debt-funded acquisition increases financing exposure in a higher-yield environment.
  • Regulatory or other approvals may delay the expected 2027 completion.
  • Traffic growth may disappoint if demographic trends or new connections fall short.
