FPA Queens Road Small Cap Value Fund on Graphic Packaging Holding Company
Thesis
Graphic Packaging is a vertically integrated paper-packaging manufacturer with operations in the U.S. and Europe. Weak industry conditions, major cost overruns at its Waco recycled-paperboard facility, excessive debt and senior-management turnover have created substantial pressure on the shares. The fund explicitly describes the holding as higher risk and has limited the position to less than 50 basis points. Its remaining optimism rests on Graphic Packaging's exposure to the secular shift from plastic toward paper in consumer and retail packaging. A stabilization in operations and balance-sheet improvement could therefore unlock value from the currently depressed base.
“Although this is a riskier position in the portfolio we are encouraged by GPK's product offerings focused on the current plastic to paper trend in consumer and retail packaging.”
