JB Global Capital on PayPal Holdings, Inc.

Thesis

The original PayPal thesis was that the market was pricing a durable and highly cash-generative payments franchise as though it faced permanent structural decline. The manager believed the business did not need dramatic improvement for the investment to generate an adequate return because intrinsic value was already materially above the purchase price. Subsequent operating results supported the thesis as branded checkout stabilized, Venmo continued double-digit growth, Braintree accelerated and management raised guidance. PayPal also continued significant share repurchases, with trailing twelve-month buybacks reaching $6 billion. The $60.50 acquisition proposal from Stripe and Advent International landed within the manager's conservative valuation ranges and close to his DCF base case, providing external validation of the valuation framework. Longer term, agentic payments, digital identity, PayPal World and advertising could provide additional growth avenues.

The business didn't need to improve dramatically to generate an adequate return; it simply needed to remain intact.
