REQ Global Compounders on Applied Industrial Technologies, Inc.

Thesis

Applied Industrial Technologies is a value-added industrial distributor and technical-solutions provider whose core maintenance and repair markets benefit from highly durable demand because equipment downtime is expensive for customers. Roughly 85% of its sales now consist of specialized technical products, and the company is steadily moving from simple distribution toward engineering, automation and system installation. REQ believes this evolution increases switching costs and makes customer relationships more recurring. Applied also operates a decentralized model in which local locations control their own profitability while central functions handle areas such as pricing, systems and capital allocation. Programmatic M&A is central to the investment case, with the company typically acquiring businesses at modest mid-to-high single-digit EBITDA multiples and in categories it knows well. Longer-term tailwinds include reshoring, aging industrial machinery, skilled-labor shortages and increased automation.

We initiated at a price that underwrites attractive forward returns and clears our qualitative bar.
