REQ Global Compounders on discoverIE Group plc

Thesis

discoverIE designs and manufactures customized electronic components for industrial customers, with exposure to structural growth markets including automation, security, renewable energy, medical technology and transport electrification. Its products are frequently designed into customers' equipment and perform mission-critical functions, creating long product cycles, customer inertia and high switching costs. REQ believes the company's continuing move away from distribution and toward specialized design and manufacturing is improving the quality and margin profile of the group. Its acquisition strategy adds niche engineering expertise, customer relationships and technical capabilities while preserving entrepreneurial autonomy at subsidiaries. REQ sees parallels with Lagercrantz earlier in its development, but discoverIE is materially smaller and therefore has a potentially longer runway if management executes successfully. Sentiment-driven weakness in UK small caps allowed REQ to establish the position at a valuation it believes offers attractive forward returns.

That creates more execution risk, but also potentially more runway if management can continue to compound organically and through disciplined acquisitions.
