WestEnd Capital Management, LLC on Target Corporation
Thesis
WestEnd views Target's national store base, brand, loyal customers and integration of stores with digital and same-day fulfillment as important competitive advantages. The company has spent several years working through excess inventories, changing consumer preferences, elevated freight costs and inflation-related spending shifts. At the same time, it continued investing in stores, digital capabilities and its fulfillment network. WestEnd believes better inventory management, improved operating execution and more normalized supply-chain costs could support an earnings recovery. Stabilizing consumer behavior, margin improvement and productivity from prior investments provide additional upside.
“We believe several factors could support stronger earnings:”
Key risks
- Consumer spending remains weak or unstable
- Inventory and merchandising execution disappoint
- Margins fail to recover
- Prior store and fulfillment investments generate insufficient productivity
