Baron Generational Growth Fund on Guidewire Software, Inc.
Thesis
The Fund views Guidewire's recent weakness as largely the result of deal timing rather than deterioration in its business. Several deals slipped from the fiscal third quarter into the fourth quarter but subsequently closed, supporting the Fund's view that the issue was temporary. Guidewire's InsuranceSuite is a core system of record for insurers, and the Fund estimates that the core-system opportunity alone represents nearly $20 billion of annual recurring revenue, roughly 20 times Guidewire's current size. The Fund believes AI can expand that opportunity by adding automation and intelligence on top of Guidewire's system of record, while also improving Guidewire's own internal productivity. It expects adoption of the company's AI-enabled capabilities to accelerate and believes AI can ultimately support faster growth, lower costs, and improved profitability.
“We think the core-system opportunity alone represents nearly $20 billion of annual recurring revenue”
Key risks
- Insurance software deals could continue to experience delays or weaker customer demand.
- AI-enabled functionality may be adopted more slowly than the Fund expects.
- Competing technologies could reduce Guidewire's ability to capture the estimated core-system opportunity.
